Experiment In Cost Containment

In Bid for Better Care, Surgery With a Warranty
"Geisinger health system has instituted a warranty policy for surgery - the fee includes 90 days of follow-up treatment. In almost no other field would consumers tolerate the frequency of error that is common in medicine. Under the typical system hospital error results in a perverse reward: the chance to bill the patient again if more treatment is necessary. Even if a patient suffers complications or has to come back to the hospital, Geisinger promises not to send the insurer another bill. The result - significantly reduced error rates and reduced costs by encouraging consistent, standardized care." (New York Times)
