Sen. Chuck Grassley took another swipe at lucrative tax breaks of nonprofit hospitals yesterday–-at a hearing that wasn’t even about hospitals.
The Senate Finance Committee convened to discuss what type of incentives are needed to lower the rates of the uninsured and underinsured. But in arranging to have a 53-year-old leukemia patient testify, Sen. Grassley (R-Iowa) slammed the world-renowned M.D. Anderson Cancer Center as much as he did her flimsy insurance policy. “Outrageous” is how he described the hospital’s collections policy...Hinting once again that the nonprofit tax breaks could be in jeopardy unless hospitals change their billing practices, Grassley said: “As we talk about the tax incentives for health insurance, I want us to also consider the billions of dollars of tax benefits conferred to nonprofit hospitals.”
