U.S. hospitals economic impact at $1.9 trillion

American hospitals support nearly $1.9 trillion in economic activity, according to a report released Monday by the American Hospital Association.

Hospitals employ more than 5 million people nationwide and rank second as a source of private sector jobs, according to a report prepared by Avalere Health LLC for the hospital group.

The report says hospitals also directly or indirectly support one out of every 10 jobs in the United States.

Hospitals nationwide provided $31 billion in uncompensated care to patients and communities in 2006, according to the hospital group.
