Digging deeper into California's hospital crisis

The shrinking state of California hospitals, involving both emergency rooms and pediatric beds, has been in the news recently. The Times offers readers a chance to dig deeper into the story with two databases.

To see which hospitals near you have emergency rooms and which facilities closed emergency departments or shut down entirely since 1998, check out this database.

To see whether hospitals near you still have pediatric wards, check out this.

You can also use our interactive map of Southern California to see for yourself how losses in in-patient beds for children correspond to where children live.

Barbara, thanks for kindly linking in our database. If you have suggestions for other data sources on California hospitals that we should try to get online, feel free to zip me an email.

Thanks,
