Hospital Notices Drop in Pregnancies, Blames Down Economy

FREDERICK, MD - The effects of the economy are showing up in the housing market, at the grocery store and now at hospitals.

Fewer people are choosing to have babies, and hospitals are starting to see their numbers decline.

Officials at Frederick Memorial Hospital say they usually see around 200 births each month, but the past couple of months they have seen as few as 160.

They attribute the decline to the bad economy. Nurses believe couples are waiting a year or two to see if the economy picks up before they decide to have a baby.

History has shown that birth rates tend to go down during depressions or recessions, but a baby boom usually follows those down periods in the economy.
