Tenet Healthcare Corp., Dallas, said it is merging two of its South Florida hospitals, effective June 1, to cut costs and allow them to share a common medical staff and governing board. North Shore Medical Center, Miami, will keep its name while Florida Medical Center, Fort Lauderdale, will become North Shore Medical Center-FMC Campus, and the two hospitals will use a single Medicare provider number, a Tenet spokesman said. The two hospitals have a combined total of 816 staffed beds.
The hospitals will continue to provide the same level of services as they provide now, Tenet said. "We will be able to more effectively recruit specialized physicians, share service-line expertise and consolidate back-office operations," said Marsha Powers, Tenet's regional senior vice president for Florida. Tenet would not disclose how much cost savings it expects or how many jobs will be eliminated.
