U.S. Sen. Michael Bennet on Monday was visiting Saint Joseph Hospital in Denver to express support for health-care reform.
Bennet, D-Colo., said in an advisory that he planned to make the point that "health care reform must shift control from insurance companies to doctors, nurses and their patients, as well as lower costs, preserve choice and make health care more affordable for Coloradans in a fiscally responsible way."
He was meeting with hospital doctors, nurses and administrators "to hear their stories of how burdensome insurance procedures hurt patients and raise costs," his statement said.
Bennet cited a study that he said showed a typical physician spends nearly three weeks a year dealing with the details of health insurance plans, at an estimated cost of $58,000 per physician per year.
The U.S. House Energy and Commerce Committee voted 31-28 late Friday, largely on party lines, to support health care reform legislation. The proposal could come up for a full House vote this fall after a congressional recess.
The legislation would include tax credits for small businesses that provide insurance for their workers and expanded prescription drug coverage for the elderly, the Los Angeles Times reported. It also would cap increases in insurance costs and give federal officials authority to negotiate directly with drug companies for lower prices under Medicare, the Times said.
"I am proud that we have approved this historic legislation moving us one step closer to achieving health care for all Americans," U.S. Rep. Diana DeGette, D-Denver, vice-chairwoman of the committee, said in a statement.
"This bill not only preserves a system that provides access to health care for the lowest-income workers in America, but perhaps more importantly, ensures that we are not paying for health care on the backs of those who cannot afford it," DeGette said.
