Mercy Killers, written by Broadway actor and playwright
Michael Milligan, will be performed at the Veteran's Memorial Center Theater,
203 E. 14th St, Davis, Monday, Nov. 11, at 7 p.m.
Milligan was inspired to write the topical one-man play
after hearing horror stories from the uninsured, many of whom suffer financial
tragedies on top of chronic illnesses.
The play examines these themes by focusing on Joe, a man
being interrogated by the police over the death of his terminally ill wife. Joe
is a working-class American man sympathetic to the Tea Party movement and the
libertarian convictions of self-reliance and the free market. When his
cancer-stricken wife loses her health insurance and they become trapped in the
labyrinth of the privatized healthcare system, Joe's faith in the American
Dream is put to the test.
Milligan has appeared in several Broadway shows including
"August: Osage County," "La Bete," and
"Jerusalem." While studying at Juilliard he won the John Houseman
Prize for excellence in classical drama. Michael has performed at many of the
Nation's leading regional theaters such including the Guthrie, Westport
Playhouse, McCarter Theater, The Shakespeare Theater, The Folger, and many
more.
The one hour-performance will be followed by a panel and Q&A
session with actor Milligan, Kaiser Permanente Vacaville physician Dr. Monica
Currie-Johnson and Davis bankruptcy attorney Stephen Reynolds. Tickets are $10
at the door.
