SCHIPP Funding Plan Agreement

Members of the Senate Finance Committee brokered a bipartisan agreement yesterday that they said would extend health insurance to an additional 3.3 million low-income children. The bill would add $35 billion over the next five years to a program that subsidizes health coverage for families not poor enough to qualify for Medicaid but with incomes too low to afford private insurance. The increased funding would come from a 61-cent increase in the excise tax on a pack of cigarettes. source: Boston Globe

"The proposal appears to provide only $35 billion in new SCHIP funding over the next five years, an amount well short of the Budget Resolution's $50 billion—the amount needed to cover all uninsured children currently eligible for SCHIP. We intend to work with members of Congress to improve this funding. source: FamiliesUSA
