Arlen Specter: 'Good healthcare bill' within 60 days

Arlen Specter on Tuesday told the AFL-CIO convention that he supports a "robust" public option as part of the president's health care plan.

Specter, who changed his party affiliation from Republican to Democrat in April, cited his longtime support of labor issues.

"There's not a lot of support for single payer health care, but it ought to be on the table, as we ought to keep all the options on the table," Specter said. He added he expects to see "a good health care bill" in the next 60 days.

The Employee Free Choice Act is a controversial measure that would make it easier for workers to unionize and has attracted criticism from business groups. Specter said that "before the year is up, I will join my colleague (Senator) Bob Casey in predicting passage of the Employee Free Choice Act, an act that will be totally satisfactory to labor."

The convention is being held at Pittsburgh's David L. Lawrence Convention Center this week.

Specter heads to Philadelphia later Tuesday with President Obama, where the president will speak at a fundraiser for the senator.
